Pages 1-11 Synopses:
Annemarie is a ten year old girl with a best friend named Ellen. She also has a little sister named Kirsti. Ellen and Annemarie were racing down the street until they got caught by Nazi soldiers. The Nazi soldiers told the girls to not run, but then they looked at Kristi. There was a tall soldier who said that Kristi looked like his daughter. He tried to touch Kristi's hair, but then Kristi screamed "DON'T!" After the soldiers let the girls go, Annemarie and Ellen swore that they wouldn't tell their mothers. Annemarie was going to tell Kristi not to tell their mother, but Kristi was already in their apartment going on and on about the story. She claimed that she wasn't scared and that they tried to touch her hair. Ellen's mother was also in the room, so now she knew the whole thing. Ellen's mother made the all the girls promise not to go the same way to school tomorrow. They promised Ellen's mom, and then Ellen's mom went home.

The Nazis closed the Hirsch's book shop to torture Annemarie and her family by not allowing them to make a living.Annemarie talked to Peter about how the Nazis are trying to take over her town.They had no idea what to do about it.
Pages 27-50 synopsis:
Kristi came home with animal fur shoes. Ellen said that her dad could make them look nice, black, and shiny. Then the Rosens brought along the Johansens to the synoguage so they could worship together. After that, Ellen's parents went to go visit their relatives. Ellen will have to bunk with the Johansens, since her parents are going to visit relatives. After Ellen gets settled, she asks Annemarie about her dead, older sister Lise. Annemarie told Ellen that she really didn't know how her older sister had died. The Nazis had then started to invade with many soldiers.
Pages 50-74 synopses:
The Nazi Soldiers are checking people to see if they are a jew. So Annemarie's parents decide to take her syblings and Ellen to her Uncle Henrik's village called Gilleleje. It is a safer area because it is very close to a coast that you could go to Sweden by boat in it. Kirsti almost blurted out to a soldier that Ellen was celebrating her new year. And that would give proof to the soldier that she was a jew. Instead Kirsti showed him her new black, shiny shoes. Annemarie and Ellen loved the new village they were in. It all looked beautiful. They looked over the sea and saw Sweden. They were playing with the little kittens. Then they started on a plan to save the jews.
Pages 74-113 synopses:
The Johansens had a funeral for their 'fake' Great Aunt Birtie. They have many people at their house when Nazi soldiers come and knock on their door! The Nazis ask them to open the casket where Great Aunt Birte was supposed to be. Mrs. Johansen thought fast and said that ' Great Aunt Birte ' Died of typhus so the Nazis didn't open it because they didn't want the disease. Then the Nazis left. Just as they left Mrs. Johansen opened up the casket to reveal folded jackets and coats for everyone for the journey across the sea to Sweden. Then Mrs.Johansen gave everyone a jacket or a sweater for the cold winter. Since Mrs.Johansen Grew up in Uncle Herik's village, she took the Rosens (with Uncle Henrik) to the port so that the Rosens (because they are jewish) could take a boat to Sweden to be safe from the Nazis.
Pages 113-132:
Annemarie had just gotten stopped by four armed Nazi soldiers on her way to giving her Uncle Henrik's lunch to him ( with the extra package). The soldiers had dogs that were hungry. Then one soldier asked, "What's in the basket?" Annemarie thought of what her mother said, "If you ever meet a soldier, act like a foolish little girl." So that is what she did. She tried to act like Kirsti. She made comebacks like Kirsti would. Then the soldier's dogs smelled meat. The soldiers picked up a marijuana coated hanker chief, and the dogs retreated their smell for meat. After Annemarie got away from the soldiers, she gave the basket to her Uncle Henrik with what was left of the food that the Nazis didn't take. She told him that her mom was scared for him and asked if she would ever see the Rosens again. Uncle Henrik said yes, but when the war was over. By the time the war was over, Annemarie was twelve. They were done.
